Sky hasn’t fallen

The New Zealand Super Fund lost $880.75 million in the year to June which is an eye watering amount for most of us.

However, it doesn’t signify the sky has fallen.

The long term trend for investments like the Super Fund is upwards but there will always be short-term fluctuations which means every now and then there will be bad results like this one.

No, the sky is not falling.
People forget that what is happening now is a short term thing and the trend will resume. I’ve got 20 or so years before it becomes an issue to me.

To give some comfort – the long term trend is always up as shown by the following:

    Dow Jones Index 1974 700
    1990.

    Oops pushed enter by mistake:

    Dow Jones Index 1974 700
    1990 2,800
    2008 11,000 plus.

This equates to a 1,600 point game in 34 years.

Come on Michael whack some more in now while it is down from its high of 14,000.

    Still not right should read:

    `This equates to a 1600% gain in 34 years’.
