My windscreen story is bigger than yours

A Facebook post about running over a duck and her ducklings led to several comments including one about a hawk which went through a  windscreen.

I can trump that.

My farmer and a friend were coming home from Southland late one night. As they drove up the Kilmog hill north of Evensdale a stag leapt off a bank, landed on the car bonnet and came through the windscreen, antlers first.

Neither of the men was badly injured but the stag died and the car was written off.

Another friend had a horse land on his bonnet while he (the friend not the horse) was driving over the Desert Road and a neighbour had a bull land on his bonnet when he (the neighbour not the bull) was driving on State Highway 1.

When you drive on country roads you get used to hitting wildlife and it’s dangerous to try to avoid smaller creatures like rabbits, possums, birds and lambs.

Whether you try to avoid bigger animals such as sheep is a matter of judgement. It is usually better to try to give way to horses and cattle if you have the time and space to do so safely.

    Aaah Ha!

    How about this, then?

My late father was the president of the local cricket club and on his way home from the pre-season AGM he hit and killed two ducks.

Unfortunately for the cricket club, Dad was the opening batsman.

When I worked in Fiji there was a rule that there was no driving between Suva and Nadi in the dark due to the liklihood of animals, particularly horses on the road. Horses were considered the worst as when hit they are tall enough that their legs are taken out from under and then the horse comes through the windscreen.

A CEO who had a Landcruiser thought he could get away with it as he had a big safe car. Unfortunately the horse came through the windscreen and killed him.

I hit a dog in a village one night. In NZ I would stop and check the dog and the car. Not on a dark night in a village in Fiji though.

Coming out of the forest one dawn my neighbour and I sped up on the County (metal) road as we got off the lousy forest road and clobbered a wild pig. Fortunately we hit him on the point of the shoulder and simply flung him aside.. if a pig goes under the car he can do major damage..

  7. I have been in a vehicle which was destroyed by an elephant. It sat on the front of an armoured car and wiped its butt. Vehicle [mine protected] was not able to withstand the pressure of 9 tons of pachyderm, and the axle and front tyres broke. The bursting of the tyres caused it to run off. [The tyres were filled with water].
