Tech tantrum 2

The computer is playing games with me.

The previous post looked fine when I previewed it but when I posted it there was double spacing where it ought not to be and none where I’d had it.

When I tried to edit the post to improve the layout it got worse.

I could have deleted it and started again, but have neither the time nor inclination to do it now and it’s easier to leave it and just have a paddy.

But if anyone who knows anything more about blogging and computers than I do – which wouldn’t be difficult – could tell me how to avoid the problem in the future I’d be very grateful.

Mutter, mumble.

I treat a computer in much the way I treat a car: I can drive it, check the oil and water, put in petrol and change a tyre; but for anything more difficult than that I consult an expert.

But there was no expert available when I needed one last night after exhausting my limited technological repertoire so I resorted to the only strategy left in my computer fixing toolbox: turned everything off, disconnected all the plugs and left it overnight. This morning I plugged everything back in, turned it all back on and after a couple of false starts because the modem wouldn’t connect everything seems to be working at normal speed.

Touch wood.

A few weeks ago we got a letter and an email explaining that Orcon was taking over Telecom’s rural wireless network and that we should check our email settings to ensure we would continue to be able to send and receive emails.

There is a long story of time wasting frustration involving several calls to the help-line. The shorter version is we are now back to dial up speed with lots of can’t-find-website-check-you-are-connected messages; the house computer can send and receive emails, eventually after several disconnects but the office computer can only send.

I don’t know if the problem is with Telecom or Orcon but I’m not very impressed with either of them – and wireless help desks don’t work in the evening.
