They should never have called it global warming

We went to bed with snow blanketing the garden and paddocks as far as we could see.

We woke up to rain, hail, sleet and icy tracks.

We were among the 1,700 farms which had to dump milk yesterday because the tank couldn’t get through and it might not get to us again today.

We don’t expect snow in the North Otago downlands this far through August, but it does happen now and then. It is far from normal in many other places such as Auckland where it last snowed 72 years ago.

The polar blast might or might not be able to be blamed on climate change. But they should never have called it global warming when this sort of weather feels like not just cooling but colding.

It’s probably going to be hard to say whether the snow has been partially, fully or not at all caused by climate change… but it is the kind of thing the theory predicts. That is, not universal rising temperatures, but greater frequency and severity of extreme weather events of all kinds.

Yeah it’s a great theory, it’s great at predicting that it predicts any anomalous weather event after that event has actually happened.

I wonder how they felt in 1918 when the Amuri Basin was entirely covered with snow over 1 meter deep and that was not drifted.
My Mum had pics taken on her ‘Kodak’ showing the flats outside her home 8 Kms north of Waiau Township where all evidence of the fences was obliterated.
That snow lasted for almost three weeks and the first land to emerge was the limestone ridge at Mouse point just north of Culverden.

That climate change sure has been going on for a bit.
I comfort myself that much of “the extreme weather events” we are made aware of is just more prominent due to the miniaturisation of the news world.
How long before the “1918 snow” in The Amuri was in the Auckland paper if it ever was.

Very lucky here in paradise no further snow since Sunday 1400 hrs, and a fair amount of clear country this morning. Waiau has more snow cover this morning as does Darfield and it is apparent that the City is a lot worse off today. We have canned appointments till next week.

The best part is they think that Tax can trump weather. Charging us more for electricity and fuel, taking away property rights for conversion of trees to other land use (while allowing Ngai Tahu to clear Eyrwell Forest for Dairying plus a $400 million dollar payout to Kaingaroa tribes so they don’t feel left out). The sooner ETS is erased from our language and statutes the better. We need 12 public servants as climate change adapter/observers. 4 PHD’s , 6 Techies and 2 admin. Every other public servant with Climate in their job title or description go look for real work! Stuck in Sunny Nelson today…

In the 1960s it was global cooling, then it was global warming, then it was climate change…now it is the war against carbon. The war against carbon is really a war against capitalism.
