Why is free speech important in universities?
The most important is if you can’t speak you can’ t have critical exchange and if you can’t have critical exchange you can’t do science, have scholarship and find truth.
What universities exist for . . the most important mission is to discover truth and to teach the next generation how to find that. And we find truth by looking for each others’ errors and to do that we have to be able to challenge and to criticise. We need to protect unorthodox ideas and dissenting voices.
