It might be a good story . . .

Paper Plus is promoting this book as one of Kerre’s choices:

This Way Of   Life
Sumner   Burstyn
This is the book of the multi award winning documentary of the same name.   It’s the tale of the Ottley-Karena family and their incredible life living in   and around the Ruahine Ranges. Mum, Colleen, dad, Peter and their seven kids   have absolutely nothing – in terms of material possessions – but they are   rich beyond belief – in terms of life skills, love and appreciation for what   is truly important… read more

It might be a good book, well written with an interesting story and stunning photos but I think the author’s recent rant and subsequent publicity will be a strong deterrent for many who might otherwise have bought it.

Thanks Air New Zealand

Air New Zealand recently ran a promotion in which you went into a draw for prizes if you entered your airpoints number when booking on-line.

I did and received an email yesterday saying I’d won 25% off a book at Paper Plus.

There’s always several books on my nice-to-have list and the voucher will give me a much appreciated discount on one of them.

Is anyone making money from books?

November 18, 2010

I’ve just got an email from Whitcoulls telling me it’s taken 25% off the price of all its books (in-store, not on-line).

It had a similar offer a fortnight ago. Paper Plus did the same last weekend and the on-line bookseller Fishpond (which is very good for getting books not in stock elsewhere) had similar discounts recently.

Does this mean there’s usually a huge mark-up on books, is it a sign that not enough people are buying books and is anyone making much money from them anymore?

Bagging customer service

October 20, 2009

Paper Plus has a new look  and a new focus on books.

The Oamaru store in one of the first in the country to get a makeover. It looks quite different but has retained the friendly, helpful customer service to which I’ve been accustomed.

I bought several books today and was given a reusable bag in which to carry them.

I went from there to the supermarket where I spent a similar sum of money and was charged an extra 15 cents for plastic bags.

Next time I’ll have to remember to take my Paper Plus bag to the supermarket.
