The pictured teapot was crafted by a famous Japanese potter on the island of Shikoku. I was present when his kiln was opened after firing. This teapot was cast aside in a trash pile because it had slumped in firing and was seen as imperfect – a failure.
I asked if I could have it – because I thought it was still useful as a teapot, and unique in its tired appearance – as if it had already been used to make too many pots of tea. The potter made a handle for it, and sent it to me as a gift – a cherished gift I’ve not only used for many years but kept in view in my kitchen as an art object – and a reminder that despite its appearance, it remains useful and uniquely beautiful. The teapot makes me smile. I see a metaphor for my life in it. . . .
