Skeuomorph – something that retains design elements that are no longer necessary to its function, but that are retained for ornamental purposes; a derivative object that retains ornamental design cues from structures that were inherent to the original; an object or feature which imitates the design of a similar artefact made from another material; an element of a graphical user interface which mimics a physical object; symbols or other objects on a computer screen that look or sound like a physical object in order to suggest their purpose.
