1. Which NZ Singer/songwriter, who turns 68 today (not on Ele’s list) is the only person to have won NZ Songwriter and NZ Album of the year for 3 consecutive years? Another clue, if you go to the NZ Music Commission’s website you will find he doesn’t exist.
John Hanlon
2. Where was he born?
Malaya
3. What was his first hit and what was it initially written for?
Damn the Dam and it was written for an energy conservation advert on home insulation.
4. This song became symbolic with what NZ Controversy?
The Save Manapouri Campaign, which happened in the late 60’s and early 70’s when the government wanted to raise the level of both Lake Manapouri and Lake Te Anau to allow them to build a power station to service the Comalco Smelter in Invercargill. There was a petition of over 250,000 and eventually the plan was called off and the power station that runs under the alps to Doubtful Sound was built. The song became the rallying cry for the campaign.
5. His second hit was written for TVNZ’s talent program “Studio One” and placed second. However, it spent 20 weeks in the NZ charts reaching #1 and was his biggest hit. What was the song?
Lovely Lady
6. His third hit featured in one of the first “NZ Tourist PR” films was called “Off the Edge” and featured 2 North American’s trip to ski the Tasman Glacier. What was the song and how did it feature in the film?
The song is Higher Trails and when the guys decide to descend from the glacier by hang gliding off it, as they take off the song kicks in.
7. As to Q5, was this song written for the film and if not how did it come to feature in the film?
As much as most people thought that it was written for the film, it wasn’t. In fact, the 2 guys heard it on the radio while they were doing their groundwork and preparation for the film and it actually inspired them to do the hang gliding sequence. If you would like to see the classic scenes and inspiring music you can at You Tube as below.
