Quote of the day

Everyone with a cell phone thinks they’re a photographer. Everyone with a laptop thinks they’re a journalist. But they have no training, and they have no idea of what we keep to in terms of standards, as in what’s far out and what’s reality. And they have no dedication to truth. –  Helen Thomas who was born on this day in 1920.

For Helen having her formative years enduring the tragedies delivered by the ‘great depression’ was remarkable person whose name has a particular resonance for me.

My Dad’s eldest sister, there were two others, two decades older than the HT quoted above was also a journalist who having no children, influenced my formative years by regular gifts of carefully chosen books.

My Helen Thomas was married to the great newspaper man, Robert (Bob) Thomas of “The Taumaranui Press” fame.
Auntie Helen and Uncle Bob were owners, publishers, editors, stringers, office managers, and cleaners of what I understood for many years to be the equal in stature to The Christchurch Press.
Reality of course had that august paper referred to as the two minutes silence but in days sans TV, wireless for many, their service to the King Country was quite remarkable evidenced when father and I travelled to Bob’s last rights and interment in the late 1980s, by the numbers who turned out.
