I do not want art for a few any more than education for a few, or freedom for a few.  – William Morris who was born on this day in 1834.

  1. Andrei says:

William Morris was a socialist of course and an associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.

He married Jane Burdon the daughter of a Stableman and a washer woman who he educated

She was an artist’s model and a favourite subject of the Pre-Raphaelites

    William Morris himself painted her

But it was Rossetti who immortalized her

  2. Andrei says:

Another interesting thing about Jane Morris (née Burden) is that when she became involved with the Pre-Raphaelites she was uneducated and destined for life as a domestic servant

William Morris paid for her to receive an education suitable for an upper class woman an opportunity she grabbed with both hands

She became fluent in French and Italian as well as an accomplished pianist moving easily in upper class circles in later life and becoming the inspiration for Pygmalion and My Fair Lady
