Quote of the day

We could only solve our problems by cooperating with other countries. It would have been paradoxical not to cooperate. And therefore we needed to put an end to the Iron Curtain, to change the nature of international relations, to rid them of ideological confrontation, and particularly to end the arms race. – Mikhail Gorbachev who was born on this day in 1931.

He also said:

If what you have done yesterday still looks big to you, you haven’t done much today.

  1. Andrei says:

    NATO was formed in 1949

After West Germany was rearmed and incorporated in NATO in 1955 the Warsaw Pact was formed as a response in 1956 – it disbanded in 1991

The problem for the West and the USA in particular was that military expenditure was a cash cow and instead of disbanding NATO in the 1990s they expanded it. And for the first time in NATO’s history it went to war – its first victim being Yugoslavia which was soon crushed and dismembered

NATO members are expected to spend 2% of their GDP on defense, this is really tribute paid to American arms manufacturers. Those that don’t meet this target are accused of freeloading

The USA spends more on arms than all the rest of the world put together and to justify this needs enemies and endless conflicts

This is why the “war on terror” will never be won, it is necessary to feed the American arms industry and also why Russia and China are demonized along with Iran and others

We live in dangerous times and it is going to end in tears
