    Good morning Mrs L,

Earlier this month I left you a message as I was leaving concerning the death of the present Queen and the flag, and you asked a question why this was connected.

Regardless of how much John Key felt about a new flag there was not enough ground swell of people who thought that was a good enough reason. The pro-republicans tried damn hard to give the impression that with a new flag republicanism would automatically follow soon after and that did not help. The way the whole thing was handled during the last few months before the vote finally killed it.

When Queen Elizabeth passes on and if Charles ascends the throne there will be more feeling and discussion on whether we carry on with the Monarchy or go it alone.

Until the republican issue is determined the flag issue will go nowhere for a while.

Recently I was in a discussion centred on the Monarchy and succession, with the side issue we face in NZ of becoming a republic.
All preceded smoothly until it was rather forcibly put that “Charles will never be King”!
The amicable discussion rather deteriorated from this point, but it did raise an interesting scenario, and I came away with mixed views on where I stood, but basically still in favour of NZ becoming a republic.

  3. tinker says:

If I was a Republican I would be praying that Charles did make it as the debate would be on in NZ within minutes of the announcement that he would be King.

  4. homepaddock says:

Tinker – why are the flag and republicanism intertwined? Several commonwealth countries have changed flag but not become republics.

  5. tinker says:

To many people the flag and republicanism are intertwined. For the large number of Monarchists in the country there is no need for a new flag while the present Commonwealth ties continue, and pushing a new flag was just an excuse to quicken up republicanism.

Perhaps the whole referendum could have been handled better and as Muldoon said – It is not so much what you do as how you do it.

  6. Andrei says:

We can have a new flag and retain the monarchy but we can’t become a republic and keep the flag

If Charles ascends to the throne I probably will become a reluctant republican but I don’t think he will

It makes much more sense for William and his consort Katherine Duchess of Cambridge to ascend to the throne, they are young and popular and present the best chance for the British monarchy to survive for another century
