    (1) the extract was taken from “The Tin Drum” by Gunter Grass – a book acknowledged as a classic of 20th century literature

    (2) Kashubian – Gunter Grass’ mother was a Kashubian and his father a German

    The protagonist in the Tin Drum has a Kashubian mother and either a German, Alfred Matzerath, or a Polish, Jan Bronski, father – as an unreliable narrator this matter is never resolved

    (3) Gunter Grass was West German when he wrote this and a German when he died

    (4) He was a member of the Waffen SS
