One Response to Friday’s answers

  1. J Bloggs says:

You can no doubt guess what my highest priority for olympic viewing is over the coming week….:)

    1) Although Judo appeared as a demonstration sport at Tokyo in 1964, it did not become a regular event until 1972 at Munich.

    2) Women’s Judo made its first appearance at Seoul in 1988 (as a demonstration sport), and became a regular event in 1992 at Barcelona

    3) Steve McDowall was selected to represent NZ in Judo at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, but was prevented from competing by the decision to join in the Boycott. He decided to switch codes at this point to rugby, and went on to have an illustrious career (although blighted by another boycott, this time of South Africa, which resulted in the cancellation of a planned series against the Springboks)

    4) 6 – NZ has had competitors at the 1972, 1984, 1988, 2004, 2012 and now the 2016 games.

    5) 0 – the closest to a NZ medal at the Olympics so far was in Seoul 1988, where Brent Cooper lost in the Bronze medal match.
