Quote of the day

Every major question in history is a religious question. It has more effect in molding life than nationalism or a common language. Hilaire Belloc who was born on this day in 1870.

That’s a heavy duty quote to post on a morning when a Catholic priest has been murdered before the Altar while celebrating Mass

And there are those who would use the narrative of a religious conflict to drag us into a war that could usher in Armageddon.

It is a spiritual conflict to be sure and we all must be wary of not being fooled by the forces of darkness that surround us

The quote of course is spot on

  2. JC says:

Belloc (I think) correctly believed that Man’s only long term defence against slavery via Socialism/Communism was religion.

Governments eventually move to control the means of production and hold men in a form of slavery where their right to work and money comes through correct behaviour. But a religion that has a basic tenet that Man has certain unalienable rights is a powerful check on such Govt totalitarianism.

How do we radically overhaul the fiat monetary system to one which serves the people./?

  4. Will says:

The Saudi monarchs and their US allies worried about communism spreading to the Middle East, and promoted a fundamentalist version of Islam (Wahabbism) as a foil. Very successful. But look at the consequences.

  5. Andrei says:

The seeds of tomorrow’s conflicts are in today’s Will.

For a brief moment in the 1990s it look as though humanity could escape our fate but that hope was soon dashed sigh

The next catastrophe looms – We were lucky our lives were lived in the time and place they were

“What’s the point of having this superb military that you’re always talking about if we can’t use it?”Madeleine Albright

  7. Will says:

Indeed. The point is, other nations will leave you alone. But all that raw force at your fingertips. Just too much temptation.

  8. Andrei says:

Will have you ever heard of a movie called Белый тигр (Belyy tigr) – White Tiger?

A mystical Russian war movie from 2012 – you can get it here but be careful if you do to get it in Russian with subtitles not the ghastly version dubbed by American voice actors (shudder) which changes the dialogue anyway

Very beautiful movie, pessimistic, prophetic and will have your brain working overtime to comprehend its true meaning

    This is not Hollywood

  9. JC says:

    Yes and no..

The World’s policemen needs a powerful military but with that 21st century power and technology it needs 21st century brainpower.

The Iraq Invasion showed that that military had lamentably few Arabic speakers, limited knowledge of Islamic history, warfare and various sects and traditions and pathetic understanding of COIN (counterinsurgency).

The good thing was the US gained these things but at an unacceptable cost.. worse, having effectively won it was unable to stop a clueless incoming President from walking away and thus creating a ten fold disaster for the Middle East and the West.

But the source of that disaster wasn’t the size of the US military, it was antedeluvian intelligence gathering and interpretation and senior personnel who didn’t understand the situation and beast they were attacking.

To quote Churchill.. “The Americans always do the right thing.. after exhausting every other possibility”.

Stop right there JC – who determines who should be “the worlds policeman”? – this is a self appointed role and totally relies upon having more military power than anyone else

And thus not only does the “the worlds policeman” become the enforcer but also the judge, jury and executioner

The Iraq Invasion showed that that military had lamentably few Arabic speakers, limited knowledge of Islamic history, warfare and various sects and traditions and pathetic understanding of COIN (counterinsurgency).

We accept our police force and justice system because they are our people appointed by our Government and the laws which they enforce are derived from our cultural history and heritage

If you were a young Iraqi and a foreign power enforced their laws upon you at gunpoint and those holding the guns did not even have a common language with you, let alone share your cultural heritage you are not going to accept this or comply.

Think about it, put yourself in their shoes

If New Zealand was invaded by an Asian super power and they replaced all our institutions by ones designed by them and enforced these changes with troops speaking in another tongue you would resist and consider it patriotic to do so

And any politician who went along with the invaders would be considered a Quisling, which is exactly what they would be

  11. Will says:

No, I hav’nt seen it Andrei, but it seems to be available on Youtube so I’ll give it a go tonight. My favourite Russian film is ‘Andrei Rublev’ by Tarkovsky. Probably spelt his name wrong. Youtube is fantastic now, a real cultural archive.

  12. Will says:

It seems to me that being the world’s policeman is bound to result in ‘Imperial over-reach’ even if you don’t screw it up. So you hollow out the middle class, taxing and bleeding them for never-ending conflicts, while the empire collapses from within. There is plenty of precedent and America appears to be following the pattern.

I don’t know why you knocked yourself for having to leave school early the other day Will – If you watch and can appreciate movies like that you clearly have a fully functioning mind firing on all cylinders and hungry for sustenance – that’s not one for sitting down and watching with the kids and a bowl of popcorn on a wet and cold Saturday night🙂 – A masterpiece though!

…it seems to be available on Youtube so I’ll give it a go tonight.

Is it now? – well its not a Hollywood movie, if it were it wouldn’t last five minutes before being taken down due to copyright – I wonder what that tells us?

  14. Will says:

Cheers Andrei. I had to leave school because Dad wasn’t well, we thought he might die and I had to try to run the farm. 37 years on, he is still here ordering me around, which is great of course. Really wonderful:)

  15. Dave Kennedy says:

“The Americans always do the right thing.. after exhausting every other possibility”.

Iraq?,,,WMD?…they rarely exhaust every other possibility…that is why we now have this endless and hopeless war against terror. The “world’s policemen” act in their own interest, not the world’s.

JC the US still has no idea what they are doing and under Trump it will get even worse.

  16. JC says:

Stop right there JC – who determines who should be “the worlds policeman”? – this is a self appointed role and totally relies upon having more military power than anyone else

Check Google for ‘The World’s Policeman” and you get over 600,000 hits.

The concept is of course deeply rooted in this post WW2 world where Britain relinquished the title to the US. Just as well known are the reasons for the title both for and against.

I simply recognise the reality of it along with its good points and bad.

    JC

  17. JC says:

DK.. how many US or ally servicemen were injured by WMD during the Iraq invasion?

“The “world’s policemen” act in their own interest, not the world’s.”

Well, fancy that. Of course you have to forget the criticism the US suffered in WW1 for not intervening sooner and the downright outrage that it set up the League of Nations and then didn’t support it and 60 million died as a result in WW2.

America was one of the most isolationist nations in the world up to and for too long into WW2 but it still cost them over 100,000 in WW1 and over 400,000 dead in WW2.

When the nation toted up the cost plus the expected future costs of war and the fight against Communism and the need for the UN to have real teeth even the Yanks could see they had to remain involved in world affairs.

Their military threat on its own and in support of the UN has been stunningly successful in cutting the numbers of wars and casualties in comparison to pre WW2. You can also see the cost where the US hasn’t taken a strong role as well.. 100 million dead to Communism and 20-30 million dead in Muslim on Muslim wars.

    So?

Check Google for “Hairy Vaginas” and you’ll get 2 million

I’m not sure that the metric of the number of Google hits on a search term should form our world view
