Another sad day in Olympic history when devious politicians use sports people as pawns in their games while lies and deceit are order of the day

    (1) At which Olympic games did New Zealand’s participation lead to a boycott by many nations

It was the 1976 Games in Montreal

    (2) How many Nations were involved in this boycott?

28 countries boycotted these games due to New Zealand’s prescence

    (3) Which New Zealand Athlete benefited by this boycott by having his main rival not competing as a result of this boycott?

John Walker whose main rival Filbert Bayi of Tanzania didn’t compete due to the boycott

    (4) Which Olympics did New Zealand boycott and can you name the athletes from New Zealand who competed anyway?

1980 Moscow though a team of eight went – 4 athletes and four officials

Ian Fergusson, Alan Thompson, Geoff Walker who were canoeists and the pentathlete Brian Newth who marched under the banner of the New Zealand Olympic Committee (A silver fern with the Olympic rings)

    (5) Have the Olympic games jumped the shark and is Baron Pierre de Coubertin spinning in his grave?

Была, да сплыла надежда … Пусть все эти псевдо-чистые иностранные спортсмены выдохнут с облегчением и выигрывают свои псевдо-золотые медали в наше отсутствие. Силу всегда боялись.

Now let these pseudo-clean foreign athletes breathe a sigh of relief and win their pseudo-gold medals while we are away. Strength has always been feared

As a follow up from last week’s questions

    1. Who was Motecuzoma the Younger better known as by history?
Montezuma who was the ruler of the Aztecs at the time the invaders arrived

    2. Just south of where he lived is an area that was known as Uluumil Kutz. What is that area know known as and what people inhabited it at the time of Motecozuma?
Yucatan Peninsula where the Maya lived

    3. These people also inhabited an area known as Quatemalan. By what name is that now known?

    4. From where did the invaders of these areas come?

    5. From what specific place did these invaders launch their invasion?
Cuba. It is also of interest that their use of cannons and firearms where not the greatest killer of the Mayans and Aztecs. Both races were almost decimated by something else the Spanish brought with them – smallpox did the most damage but also measles and other common viruses cused a number of deaths.
