Andrei and Teletext get my thanks for posing yesterday’s questions.

Should they have stumped us all they can claim a virtual batch of shortbread by leaving the answers below.

    (1) What type of ship was the USS Liberty when it was built?

    The USS Liberty was built as a “liberty ship”, a general cargo merchant ship, mass produced during WW2, several thousand were built during the war and some had very long lives as general cargo ships in the worlds merchant fleet

    As J Bloggs mentioned in his answer she was actually a “Victory” ship, Victory ships being an upgrade to the original Liberty design produced in the last year of the war

    (2) When did the USS Liberty incident occur and what was the context?

    8 June 1967 – during the “Six Day War” – the reason why this ship was attacked occurred remain mysterious to this day

    (3) Who was responsible?

    The ship was initially attacked by the Israeli airforce with the Israel’s navy launching a follow up attack

    (4) How many men were killed in this incident?

    34 American sailors were killed

    (5) To what Port did the USS Liberty go to after this incident?

    After the attack the ship was able to proceed under her own steam to Valetta in Malta where she was drydocked for repairs before returning to the USA where she was eventually scrapped

    To add to the above answers the USS Liberty was acquired by the US Navy in the early sixties and converted from a merchant vessel to a spy ship

    These ships were cheap and plentiful at that time

    It was also called Brittania or better known now as Great Britain

    6. Haustaths and what was the main commodity it had?
    The absolutely most beautiful Austrian town now called Haalstatt and it’s main commodity was salt which was mined in the hills surrounding the town. At the time of Theoderic the Great it was the major salt producing area in Europe

    7. Sarmatia?
    As Andrei said it actually covered a number of modern countries but probably the biggest is now known as Ukraine.

    8. Lutetia?
    Paris

    9. The Amber Coast?
    The Bay of Danzig or the Bay of Gdansk where Baltic amber is still being mined.

    10. Mendiolanum?
    Milan
