    He was the Byzantine Emperor for 38 years from 1081

    (2) What series of historical events did he inadvertently kick off?

    The Crusades

    Alexios Komnenos reign was marked with constant warfare on two fronts though he managed to contain his enemies.

    He asked Pope Urban II for military aid against the Turks in the East leading Urban II to proclaim the Crusades

    Alexios was horrified when the crusaders appeared on his territory and sent them East as quickly as he could to fight the Turks rather than ravaging his lands

    (3) Who was Peter the Hermit?

    Peter the Hermit hearing Urban’s call raised a rag tag army of 20,000 undisciplined men. Their crusade is known as the peoples crusade

    (4) What regrettable activity did Peter the Hermit’s followers initiate?

    Peter the Hermits men began their crusade my murdering Jews in Germany and continued doing this on their way to the East – the first outbreak of antisemitism in Europe

    His army undisciplined army was wiped out when they encountered the Turks at Civetot
