“Would you mind holding her?” she asked.

The her in question was a two-week old baby and of course I didn’t mind.

Being entrusted, if only very temporarily, with someone else’s beloved and very new daughter and  being able to savour that indefinable but immediately recognisable baby scent is one of life’s very real pleasures for which I’m grateful.

Nostalgia is a wonderful thing but as I recall new babies smell quite bad a lot of the time – explosive noises from nether regions followed by a “wheeeew

I recall cleaning shit off just about everything…

But after a bath and a powdering the bundle of joy can be placed in the hands of a visitor with relative security provided he or she has not been fed too recently and is primed for the next detonation

Don’t get me wrong I remember all of this fondly, very fondly indeed
