Sunday soapbox

Sunday’s soapbox is yours to use as you will – within the bounds of decency and absence of defamation. You’re welcome to look back or forward, discuss issues of the moment, to pontificate, ponder or point us to something of interest, to educate, elucidate or entertain, amuse, bemuse or simply muse, but not abuse.

One Response to Sunday soapbox

The New Zealand Herald’s report from Syria

A welcome respite in Syria – It’s from AAP

What I want to bring to your attention from this piece is not the content per se but the style – as a student of language and words I’m fascinated

In particular the word regime does not appear in the text and for the first time in years we see phrases like

Damascus and its ally, Russia, as well as 97 insurgent groups fighting against them, had said they would commit to the plan.

The truce does not apply to Islamic State (Isis) and al-Qaeda affiliate the Nusra Front, and the Syrian Government and Moscow have said they will not halt combat against those militants.

AAP has changed its style sheet and this also applies to the BBC who in the report I saw had also replaced regime with Government, Syrian Government, Government forces and Damascus

Hopeful signs for long suffering Syria but early days…

There are many players who would like sabotage this progress – alas
