Thursday’s quiz

While I’m blogging lighter you’re welcome to pose the questions.

There’s no need to follow the five-question formula I used.

Anyone who stumps everyone will win a virtual case of nectarines.

  1. Andrei says:

    (1) For what was Sir Alec Issigonis most known?

    (2) Where was he born?

    (3) What was the historical event that brought him to England?

    (4) What was the scandal that rocked the 1996 Monte Carlo rally?

  2. Will says:

I reckon you’ve got this in the bag Andrei, no-one has a clue who this guy is.

  3. Andrei says:

The funny thing is everyone will be familiar with what he is remembered for – question 5 which I accidentally omitted might have been the clue

I’ll ask it with the answers and I bet that a large percentage of the readers will answer in the affirmative

  4. Teletext says:

    Andrei

    1. Having owned more than one mini, including one of the very first models and being a bit of a car nutter I can say that he was the designer of the BMC Mini.

    2. He was born in Greece but somewhere in the depths of my mind I seem to recall that exactly where he was born was a disputed area in the Greek/Turkey war and could now be part of Turkey. I could be wrong though.

    3. I know that he came to Britain from Malta after the death of his father but I’m not totally sure why his family was in Malta. I assume that it had something to do with the war. I also know that he was a British subject at the time.

    4. Andrei, going by the theme of your questions, you might have typed in the wrong year 1996. I don’t recall any major scandal that year but in 1966 10 cars were disqualified for having faulty headlights, including the first 4 cars to cross the line including 3 Mini Cooper entrants and a Ford Cortina which was second across the finish line. The headlights were fitted with a single non-dipping bulb which was not used in the standard models for sale. It was seen at the time as being a real nitpicking reason for disqualifying the cars and very nearly became the end of a great Rally.

I’m interested in reading question 5

  5. Andrei says:

You are right teletext 1966 was the year I meant

I got distracted as I entered the questions by a knock on the door – Mormons as it happens and so messed up – it doesn’t take much as you age

Maybe though it wont matter too much – quizzes with an underlying theme which has several points to made if you want look for them are what I try for
