Friday’s answers

J. Bloggs, Andrei and Teletext posed the questions for which they get my thanks.

(Marcel Marceau in Silent Movie was the only answer I was sure of, though like Andrei I’d have guessed Sounds of Silence  as fitting the theme).

If they’ve stumped us all they can claim a virtual bunch of roses by leaving the answers below.

    (1) What is an “oud “?

This is a fretless stringed instrument of the Eastern Mediterranean with a bowl back. Usually associated with Turkey and the Levant

    (2) What is “Hasapiko“?

An ancient dance originally danced by Soldiers in Byzantine times – it and its derivatives are danced in Greece and the Balkans

One derivative Sirtaki has become a movie trope since Anthony Quinn danced it with Alan Bates to the music of Mikis Theodorakis in 1964 – Can you name the movie? 🙂

    (3) What is “Lezginka“?

This is Caucasian dance, versions of which are found from Israel to Russia – it is the only dance I am aware of where men are seen dancing en pointe

    (4) What are “Character Shoes” and who would wear them?

These are worn by ballet dancers in dances based upon folk or national dances included within Classical Ballets

e.g Danse Russe in Swan Lake

    (5) What is a “Pas de deux” ?

Step of two A dance for two in a ballet – usually a male and female

Good your daughters are doing ballet J Bloggs – My mother was a dancer and one of my sisters got the gene as did my eldest daughter

All the females in my family have done ballet for generations but the hit rate is only about 33% – you have it or you don’t I guess.

If “character shoes” are in your daughter’s vocabulary they are quite far advanced I’d guess or a least interested in advancing

    1) They are all pieces of music in which no notes are scored, so are silent when performed.

    2) The sound of silence

    3) Leonardo Da Vinci

    4) Marcel Marceau

    5) –

And I suspect the movie in question in Andrei’s answers is Zorba the Greek

    1. During the late 60’s, 70’s and 80’s NZ had a thriving Golf tour and a number of the worlds top players came to ply their trade.
Which is the closest number of players who have competed in NZ over the years who have won at least 1 Major Championship
    a) 25 b) 50 c) 75 d) 100

The answer amazingly is 100, it is in the high 90’s and started with Gene Sarazen and Walter Hagen in the 193’s. A list was compiled for the NZPGA Centenary in 2013 and is on their Centenary website plus the additions to the original list.

    2. Who was the only golfer since Ben Hogan to win two US Open’s back to back?

    Curtis Strange

    3. Who was the last golfer to win the Open Championship (British Open) 3 times in a row?

    Peter Thomson

    4. Only 3 players have won the Masters back to back. Who are they?

In order Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods

    5. Between 1950 and 1953 Ben Hogan won 6 Majors. How many did he play in over these 4 years?

He only played 9. 4 each Masters & US Open and in 1953 the Open Championship for the only time.
In fact from 1948 to 1953 he won all 8 of his majors and played in only 12. None in 1949 when he was recovering from a terrible car crash that nearly claimed his life.

I agree with J Bloggs that Andrei’s movie is Zorba the Greek
