Flying the flag

The Herald asks would you stand and wave this flag?

And has artists impressions of some of the 40 long-listed designs as they might have been used.

All look better than I thought they might and this is still my preferred option.

One doesn’t like to be unkind. At best a mutilated NZ Flag. These other designs have been better described as logo’s or whatever. Maybe there might be a place for them for sport supporters to buy at the Warehouse, (as indeed the black silver fern one has been for years).
Our present flag ticks all the boxes for me. It is serious, timeless, a strong connection to our heritage. Its done the yards, and transcends time. A connection to our forefathers. That connection has an emotional component as well. Something that a new contrived flag will not replace.
It may well be true that John Keys roots here in NZ are not that deep. He may not feel what the average Kiwi feels.

First thing this morning checking out websites for the latest news as usual, seeing Mahe holding a new NZ flag aloof, I felt a most unexpected ping of emotion. Where the hell did that come from I thought, confused I concluded I needed coffee.
Later in the morning, post coffee, I was still a little unsettled about what the hell ‘that’ was about. I then realized I ‘get it’ , we’ve made it, we’re there, here we are world we’re Aotearoa New zealand.
That moment when the first athlete steps up on to an Olympic podium to receive a gold medal with the new flag raised behind won’t be cringe worthy, it will be quite a emotional.
Remember how we would ask any visitors as soon as they got off the plane what they thought of us so far, we don’t need to do that any more. Mother England, when we were barely out of puberty buggered off with a tart of a continent with a fancy accent, that’s working out well isn’t it, our brothers across the ditch have been giving us crap for 100yr, we’re not taking it anymore. We’re actually better than them, we’ve won.
    Time for a beer. .!
