    1. a) The New English Dictionary and with the second edition it became
    b) The Oxford English Dictionary
    2. He was an Assistant Surgeon employed by the Surgeon-Generals Department of the Union Army, which after the Civil War became the US Army.
    3. He was an inmate at the Asylum for the Criminally Insane, Broadmoor, Crowthorne, Berkshire where he stayed until 1910 when his brother gained permission to take him back to the USA and he died in 1920 at a hospital for the elderly insane in Hartford, Connecticut at the age of 85. The papers to allow him to leave were signed by no other than Winston Churchill.
    4. On 17 February 1872 he shot and killed George Merrett in Lambeth near the Waterloo Railway Station. He was found Not Guilty on the grounds of insanity
    5. The 42nd and final volume of the dictionary was published in 1928.
