Quote of the day

To defend democracy we must recognise its limits. Its most fundamental limit is that we cannot make our representatives act how we would like them to, nor do we have much incentive to do so. While our current democratic institutions are not perfect models for liberty or even democratic equality, nor is rule by experts.

Democracy is more than just parliaments and campaigns and voting. It is an assertion that we all have the right to an equal stake in our political order. It is a shame few politicians and bureaucrats agree. Chris Berg

Our Democracy is threatened from several areas some linked and some just isolated points of origin.
Bureaucrats have become in too many cases an autonomous power acting within their delegation, that is in reality too lightly overseen, monitored or controlled.
Elected officials are too often not intellectually or educationally equipped to function, with many reaching a position well above what their abilities signify as desirable.

The “crats” prepare a position paper on what they see as the way forward, the elected member abdicates their role to question, modify or even reject that option, the spin doctors prepare a press release to obfuscate and even lie to present a minimum accountability position allowing the peoples representative to hand it all back to the Crats and that folks is what a modern democracy really is and how it functions.
In larger metros and national ruling bodies there will be an additional layer of non elected functionaries from political parties who will enter the formation of action in parallel with the crats to work a desired ideology into things.

Guess who pays for all that self aggrandisement and security of the mirage of power, the whole flawed mess of pottage was far too graphically illustrated in the rates debacle where some of the elected rubber stamps were going to abstain and or absent themselves as the ratepayers of the super city were being prepared to have their hard earned cash removed in eyewatering and painful legislated removal by fiat.
