Word of the day

Malthusian – of or relating to Malthus or his theory that population tends to increase at a faster rate than its means of subsistence and that unless it is checked by moral restraint or disaster (as disease, famine, or war) widespread poverty and degradation inevitably result.

Malthus wasn’t wrong but he was looking in the rear vision mirror. He could hardly have imagined someone like Norman Borlaug, certainly one of the greatest humans in history who introduced rust free dwarf yet high producing wheat varieties that turned countries like India, Pakistan and Mexico from net importers to exporters and saved the lives of at least a billion people. In the process India’s fertility rate dropped from near 6 per woman to near two because with reduced or eliminated starvation you don’t need the same redundancy of children.

Malthus’ theory I guess should be seen as one prong of a fork compared to others that recognise the almost endless ingenuity of Man to rise to the occasion and create vast improvements in the quality of human life.

  2. Populations grow when they are provided with food. New Zealand farmers pride themselves on “feeding the world”. Does this mean that farmers here are exacerbating the growth of the global population – often referred to as “over-population”.

    Wisdom, Robert Guyton, Attend!

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

I’ve been in moderation here several times and on other blogs and I understand why. There are some subjects, words and phrases that the blog owner wants to have a look and think about before release as a basic precaution against falling foul of the law or blog policy.

When I post I’m always aware that it isn’t my blog and that the owner has full rights as to the content on the blog.. and fair enough.

  7. Being captured by “subjects, words and phrases” is fair enough, JC, but my comments aren’t subject to that system. Mine are all blocked no matter what I write in them. You didn’t address the situation where people are not treated equally. I guess, like Ele, you don’t hold that equality is important at all. I thought you people did. But no, it seems you don’t.
