    2. Captain James Cook. HMS Resolution started life as a merchant collier, was purchased by the Royal navy for what was really a small sum, and renamed HMS Drake. Afraid of upsetting the Spanish, the name was quickly changed to Resolution and Cook stated that it was the finest ship he sailed.
