Left won’t accept socialism failed

Quote of the day:

The big, bad thing is that large parts of the Left have never faced up to the failure of socialism. The nicer Leftists, often very belatedly, deplored Stalin and Mao – the purges, the Gulags, the famines, the invasions. The more intelligent ones detected certain (let us put it gently) problems with state ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange. Yet when, in 1989, the Berlin Wall was knocked down by the citizens in whose name it had been erected, few could admit that this was a defeat for socialism as fundamental as that of Nazism in 1945. Charles Moore.

Would it be too much to hope that the Labour and Green parties could admit this and drop the socialist policies which are doomed to fail in the future as they have in the past?

Ele – you are sounding increasingly shrill and desperate.
    What’s up?

  2. Deborah says:

I guess it’s too much to hope that the right will stop engaging in the casual conflation of communism and socialism, let alone asking them to grasp the rather more subtle point that socialism is not the same as social democracy.

  3. David says:

Agree with the above two. Furthermore, neither Mao or Stalin were even communists as defined my Marx and Engels in their manifesto.

And isn’t it odd how the right always remember Mao and Stalin and never seem to notice the highly socialised and well off Scandinavians?

Also, one more of their canards has now been disproven. According to Bank Suisse, Australians are, on average, the world’s wealthiest people, have less income disparity than US, UK, NZ and also have the world’s highest minimum wage.

If old-fashioned Capitalism was intellectually capable of defending itself, it would not be dislodged for many generations. But, fortunately for Socialists, there is little chance of this.

  5. Gravedodger says:

Socialism in any form will always fail as it removes any desire for excellence at anything other than spending OPMs.

  6. Armchair Critic says:

None of the examples quoted are of socialist governments. Most were authoritarians who reserved the fat of the land for themselves and their cronies or sold it for their personal profit, and systematically monitored, repressed and legislated against most of their citizens.
The title of the post is farcical, and deserves all the contempt that a title like “Right Refuses to Admit Capitalism has Failed”.

  7. Armchair Critic says:

By the way, the Recent Comments function, which I find quite useful, seems to be out of action. If it’s deliberate, that’s ok, otherwise, can you please reinstate it?

The post; it’s title and content and the intent of the author in posting it is farcical. Brought Gravedodger out into the open again though, so it has comic value.

  9. homepaddock says:

Not deliberate. It works with Firefox but not Explorer so don’t think problem is at my end.

  10. Viv K says:

Recent comments doesn’t work on my phone either. Some people play online scrabble, I prefer reading and commenting on blogs. It’s not as easy as without that recent comments function. But, no worries, I’ve got the Luminaries to read and a submission on off shore drilling to do.

  11. Armchair Critic says:

Ok, I hope whoever is responsible gets around to making it work soon.

  12. Gravedodger says:

Nice, Robert, that my right to an opinion is humor for you.
I have lived my whole life in the open but my ability to enjoy the blogs has come up against a serious obstacle so please do not ever think my absense is anything other than reduced opportunity beyond my control.
    Have a very nice day.
