    2. ?
    3. Water and sour mash.
    4. To drink.
    5. ?

  3. Alwyn says:

    1. P. J. O’Rourke. A marvellous comic writer. He’s also responsible for my favourite “Don’t vote. It only encourages the bastards” and one that is particularly appropriate today. It goes something like, and my memory may be faulty “The good news is Obama says the rich are going to pay for everything. The bad news is that Obama says everyone is rich”
    2. Is that the part of the whisky that evaporates and is lost while it is aging in the barrel? That’s my guess anyway as it sounds about right
    3. Well at least 99% is made up of water and ethanol in about a 60/40 ratio (at least as it is in the shop when sold). The rest is just contaminants from the smoked grain that was fermented and the barrels it is aged in.
    4. The French is to drink. I guess the others are also.
    5. As you can see from my answer to 3 I’m not a great whisky drinker. A good red wine for me.

  4. 1. PJ O’Rourke indeed.
    2. Evaporation. There’s a great movie with that title just recently out.
    3. Whiskey is made from fermented grain mash; it is sometimes malted.
    4. To drink, but I think [because of the be sound in the Romance languages quoted] it might mean to imbibe rather. I don’t recognise the Māori word.
    5. Water only in the time of direst need. Wine before whiskey, but beer in preference. Seriously, NZ has some amazing beers.

  5. Sorry, Angel’s Share is the movie, not Evaporation.
