Just wondering . . .

. . . if sport (specifically tennis and golf)  has Opens does it also have Closeds?

I believe the converse of “Opens” in this context would be “Invitations” where the players would be invited to compete as opposed to qualifying to compete – in theory at least

  2. An Open is open to both professionals and amateurs. There golfing and tennis events which are limited to amateurs and others which are limited to professionals (and, as Andrei notes, invitationals) so yes.

  3. Andrei says:

Open means Graeme anyone can aspire to compete – even you or I.

For prestige events who actually gets to compete depends on a predefined ranking or qualifying schema so you know what you have to do and achieve to get there

In NZ golf there is a NZ Open which is open to professionals and amateurs. There is a NZPGA Championship which is open to professionals from around the world. There used to be a NZPGA Closed Championship that was only open to NZ resident professionals. Such events were also held in Australia and UK countries. Since the advent of the various PGA Tours, the Closed Championships have lapsed.
