    1. I think it’s Friday ‘though I’m not sure.

    2. An iPad. I LOVE it. Also, series one of Downton Abbey on DVD. I haven’t watched it at all: I have been saving it up as a summer holiday treat. My husband asked me a couple of weeks ago what I would like for my birthday, coming up in mid-January, and I said, “Series two of Downton Abbey.” He got the hint for Christmas…

    3. Holiday!

    4. Fletcher Bay, at the top of the Coromandel Peninsula. My parents took us camping at Port Jackson, just down the road from Fletcher Bay, every year, where the larger beach suited us more, and my memories of those times are suffused with sun and colour. These days, I prefer the more intimate scale of Fletcher Bay. It has grass and pohutakawa, golden sand and a gently sloping beach, blue sea for swimming and rock pools for poking about it.

    5. My Christmas books, one from my mother and one from my husband. Both by Margaret Atwood, whose writing I enjoy very much.

    I hope you are getting a break, Ele, ‘though I guess that work continues on the farm. I’ll be picking up tools again next week: I’ve got several writing and research projects on the go that I want to push along a bit before the student rush starts up again.

    (2) Too easy – Nadezhda, Christmas 1989

    (3) Vacation

    (4) Too hard – a big planet, too small a time to appreciate it all but the big empty spaces appeal not the glitz so not Los Vegas (I’ve been there the capital of tack) , nor a cruise ship.

    (5) The Book of books – by Melvyn Bragg, The Death of Ivan Ilyich – Leo Tolstoy

    1) Nope, but I think it’s a good thing.
    2) Define “interesting”. I’ve got an old-fashioned double-edged razor and badger-brush set this year, no more over-priced multi-bladed marketing nonsense for me.

    2.Can’t think of anything outstanding, but this is more an indication of my failing memory other than I never get interesting pressies.

    5. Jo Nesbo- The Leopard….., auction pact thriller, never read anything before from him and only bought it because I had a gift voucher to spend but I love it.

    4. After being in the UK for the previous two summers anywhere in NZ does this year but I do wish we could get rid of the overcast days in Hawkes Bay.
    5 Nothing specific but I do wish they would improve the racing pages in the Hawkes Bay Today.

    2) iPad; beats socks and hankies any day of the week!

    4) Ethiopia, because you get the western Christmas, and then the Ethiopian Christmas about two weeks later! (Spent Christmas there in 2007, but it was only 1999 in Ethiopia; go figure!)
    5) Sure have; I’ve got four or five books on the go. The most interesting so far has been the autobiography of former Zimbabwe cricketer Henry Olongo who quit the team and Zimbabwe during the 2003 ICC World Cup because his opposition the the Mugabe regime was likely to see him imprisoned and “disappear”. He was fortunate that Zim had to travel to South Africa for a match later in the tournament, and he was able to flee.
