I don’t hate Christmas . . .

. . . but after spending part of yesterday amid the crowds shopping in Dunedin yesterday I thought of this :

Oh look, yet another Christmas TV special!  How touching to have the meaning of Christmas brought to us by cola, fast food, and beer…. Who’d have ever guessed that product consumption, popular entertainment, and spirituality would mix so harmoniously?  ~Bill Watterson, Calvin & Hobbes

You don’t have to be a Christian to celebrate hope, joy, peace and love but too often they are forgotten in the madness that leads up to Christmas Day.

As I prepare for what started as a barbeque tonight for our local staff and grew I’m trying very hard to remember:

As long as we know in our hearts what Christmas ought to be, Christmas is.  ~Eric Sevareid

    I swear if never hear
I hear those sleigh bells jing jing jingling
    jing ling jingling along

ever again it would be a mercy

And as for that red suited travesty ho ho hoing well this is a safe for work blog, so I’ll button my lip.

And of course we now have the annual ritual of smearing feces all over the Virgin Mary and the gloating Catholic bashing that ensues

“Peace on Earth and goodwill to all men”?

The whole thing is a tawdry, tacky, banal and an essentially empty mishmash of crap.

Again, Andrei only if we let it. We can choose not to buy in to the crap.

I don’t do Christmas at all – I do the Feast of the Nativity instead on the Seventh of January – well the night of the Sixth.

All the good bits without the dross
