#4 I just realised Laos is not in the Southern Hemisphere…a guess Montevideo? My travel agent says Vientiane (sp) is the “Paris of the Orient!” (That’s worth .25 of a point, surely?)

Vientianne is the Paris of the Orient Cadwaller … well I’ll be!

I always thought Baku was the Paris of the East so I did a double take then saw that you had written “Orient” rather than “East”.

Relieved that my whole world hadn’t been turned upside down by this new and startling knowledge that there were two Paris’s of the East I went to google and searched and too my utter dismay I found

Paris of the East may refer to:
    Beirut, Lebanon
    Bucharest, Romania
    Budapest, Hungary
    Casablanca, Morocco
    Ghazni, Afghanistan
    Hanoi, Vietnam
    Kolkata, India
    Lahore, Pakistan
    Shanghai, China
    Warsaw, Poland

And while I was familiar with this claim for Beirut I wasn’t aware that this claim had ever been made for any of the other cities listed.

And even worse neither Vientianne nor Baku appear.

My guess is that the claim for Baku comes from the citizens of that fair city who long ago bailed and moved to Moscow, it being a place which might best be admired from afar.

I would relieve the sense of unease all this has caused me with a stiff Vodka but alas some ninny has, for my own good I understand, just increased the excise duty on it to save me from myself.

I see a problem with this poser. I suggest that the question be restricted to the “Paris” of NZ.

Despite the “Rues” in Akaroa it cannot be that locale as it doesn’t have a river.
    That leaves Balclutha…fail!
    Hamilton…Fail!
    Riverton…no Guyton squirms there.
    Wanganui by either spelling…nah!
Of course..Palme Nord!!! Boulevards. Cold winters. A university on the South Bank.
