6/10

6/10 in the NZ Herald news quiz.

I’m not sure exactly where Southland becomes Otago but I am sure the question asking which of four towns isn’t in Southland had two in Otago.

When I visit Google Maps the border between Otago and Southland is chaotic to say the least or in the inimitable words of Sir Peter Leitch,”to be fair”.
Starting on the coast in the Southern Catlans, the boundary line meanders north well to the east of Gore, has a very peculiar enclave to the west of the Clutha at Roxburgh, then heads west through somewhere around Garston on the southern boundary of Lakes District County.

I remember going to “West Otago” at Tapanui for the SI Springston Trophy (pony club teams event) in the late 70s and the only way there seemed to be through Central from the Clutha Valley via Raes Junction or to go well south of Balclutha and up the Pomahaka valley from I think Waipahi.
Any Idea of a direct route from North Canterbury was a slightly wacky idea “to be fair”.

The very first time I encountered Southern Hospitality on any scale and it was so humbling and overwhelming. Farmers with absolutely no connection to Pony Club made their shearers quarters, cottages and in some cases their homes available free of any charge. Unbelievably hospitable people, we always understood that south of the Waitaki or as HP describes it the right side (if one is facing East) the people were more friendly, generous and hospitable but the reality was an eye opener to the more self centered folk from the north “to be fair”.

The true right of any river always means the right hand side when facing down river. By this definition, even if you face west the southern side of the Waitaki is the right side, but we’re really very fond of most people on the other side 🙂
