In her own words

It’s official – Cathy Odgers, who is better known as Cactus Kate, has confirmed she’s put her name forward to be a candidate for Act.

Seeking to be a candidate is the just first step on the journey to becoming an MP. But she has professional qualifications which could be useful in parliament and she is young and female which contrasts with other current and potential Act MPs.

The biggest asset she bring to her party is loyalty, a quality which has been sadly lacking among Act MPs in recent times. In her own words:

Loyalty to the Leader of ACT and focus on the ACT Party principles is paramount in any potential candidate. ACT is a small party and in 2011 it has to be a unified party of qualified, motivated candidates heading into the election. I support Don Brash as Leader of ACT and I support unequivocally the campaign management team and Board.

No doubt the left is combing her blog to throw her words back at her but she doesn’t resile from them and points readers to  Deborah Hill-Cone who wrote:

Then there is acerbic blogger Cactus Kate, who positions herself as dangerously prickly but is actually a very kind person, in private, when no one’s looking.

Those on the pink to red end of the political spectrum like to think they’re the only ones with compassion. They’re wrong, there is at least as much compassion on the blue end.

Many of the differences over politics aren’t about the goal but the journey and how best to pay for the trip.

I am not an Act support and Cathy’s candidacy won’t change my voting preference. But one of the virtues of MMP is that it enables a wider range of views to be represented in parliament and having Cathy as a candidate could help the party broaden its support.

Cathy’d be a mug to lasso herself to that misanthropic crew, loathed by so many New Zealanders.
    She won’t do it.

Guess she didn’t read your comment the other day Rob; or was “that misanthropic crew, loathed by so many New Zealanders” meaning the Green Party?

  2. robertguyton says:

Cathy and I have shared views before Inv2.
    I’ve got her measure.
(Your hatred of the Greens makes you look as anti-environment as Key and Brownlee! Modern Tories at least pretend to consider the environment.)
Meeting with Nick Smith tomorrow Inv – I’ll mention that you’re dragging the side down 🙂

  3. johnsonmike says:

Wait till Jonathan Marshall interviews the many cuckolded wives!

    This will be juicy.

I did advise her not to….

  4. Cadwallader says:

NZ is blessed to have someone of Kate’s quality standing for any of the current parties. Great stuff in my opinion.
RG: I for one do not hate the Greens for their environmant policies, I loathe them for their anti-humanity policies which involve control of our primary aspirations.
J’Mike: Are you sure of your sources here?

  5. robertguyton says:

Cadwallader – your primary aspiration is to dig up coal and burn it?
    God help you.

  6. johnsonmike says:

Gidday Cad, my “sources” are her own blog.

    It’s wonderful stuff.

  7. Fredinthegrass says:

Cactus Kate Hone Hawira Rg can you handle the excitement.
By the way Rg having difficulty commenting at your blog place, so craving indulgence from Hp……..
Apart from the physical and political differences what is the difference between the qualities of these two…… and do I read your concern for CK is what the media will make of her past comments rather than her Hone like ability to stir the s..t.

  8. robertguyton says:

Fred – something’s amiss with my comments function I know and I’ll suss it out tonight I hope…
    Hone’s qualities .v. Cathy’s qualities?
Cathy will be ruined as soon as she steps into the light – her past statements will be used to ridicule her.
Hone has already been through that and still gets stropped up by saying such outrageous things as: shut your fat mouth gnashing of conservative teeth
He makes it through because he supports the oppressed. Cathy cheers for the rights of the oppressors 🙂

  9. Inventory2 says:

“Hatred” is far too strong a word Robert. Open your mind to the possibility that someone else in the blogosphere has a sarcastic streak…

  10. Cadwallader says:

RG: My aspiration is to farm this earth and the resources with which it is endowed for the benefit of the pre-eminent species, ie us! (Well those of us who don’t yearn for another stone-age anyway.)

J’Mike: I read cactus regularly please explain to me where the Cuckolds are kept? (Sounds like a Tom Jones’ song title.)

  11. Fredinthegrass says:

Thank you Rg. Having difficulty agreeing with your last line, but then I have always seen CK as a bit of a hoot – perhaps I need to take a more serious look?

  12. robertguyton says:

    sarcastic …else … don’t follow you Inv2…

Cadwallader: Your aspiration leaves me unimpressed. Is that it?
No wonder you struggle when I share my higher ideals with you. I’ll not give up on you though. You can’t be all bad.

  13. robertguyton says:

She’s a hoot alright Fred. I read her stuff often enough but they’ll make hay from her past self-aggrandisement and boasting , especially about men she’s had and her disparaging statements about lesser beings (poorer humans than herself.) Should be a hoot indeed.

  14. Inventory2 says:

Cathy has already anticipated that her words will be used against her. She blogs:

Some poorly read left-wing blogs have commented on my potential candidacy with respect to my apparent extremist views on a range of issues. I do not intend to delete any past material on my blog and stand by all of it. I simply ask for the material to be used in the context it was written as to date it has not been.

Go for it Robert; smear her all you wish. She’s a way smarter cookie than you Sir.

  15. robertguyton says:

I wouldn’t stoop so low as to smear Cathy Inv – I’ve nothing against her at all, in fact I’m worried that she’ll be roasted. Bloggers who are bold and cheeky sometimes hit a brick wall when they go out into the world. Politics is an especially harsh environment for a broadcaster. Good luck Cactus Kate, I say, you’re gonna need it. But then Inv2, what do I know and who cares about my dopey witterings any way? Not me!

  16. Cadwallader says:

RG: Please give up on me. I note you flagrantly suggest you have “ideals.” No you do not! You have weak theories supported only by your personal shortcomings.

  17. robertguyton says:

Codswalloper – certainly! Consider yourself given up upon. Don’t stop commenting here though Cods – the entertainment value is high in you!
