Are these within the rules?

My farmer spotted these signs near Waitati a couple of days ago.

It’s not easy to see in the photos but there does appear to be an authorisation statement so they probably comply with the Electoral Act.

But the Dunedin City Council has a by-law prohibiting such signs outside the three month campaign period and it’s a little more than six months until the election.

Unless they have special consent these signs are another sign that Labour has a very casual attitude towards the rules.

A story from the “What else is new” department; much like the stop signs that Labour activists are waving at the roadside despite NZTA having suggested they are unlawful. Labour’s attitude to the rule of law is somewhat cavalier.

It may be to do with signs on private land c/f signs on public land.

  3. Richard says:

    Have just alerted the “ODT”

Assuming its on SH1, my understanding is that on private land, within a specific distance of the road, the signs only have to conform to LTSA safety dimensions. But 2 questions: Why bother putting hoardings up now, especially in a locked-in Labour electorate? And why would anyone alert the ODT – when that will only generate more publicity?

It doesn’t matter whose land it is – council by-laws only allow election hoardings within the election period.

Pointer2 – I suppose he’s desperate to get name recognition – they don’t emntion the party vote. But some publicity is bad publicity especially when the party that spent so much time making rules for us when it was in power chooses which rules it follows.

Isn’t this story just descending into the gutter?

  7. homepaddock says:

How so Andrew? I’m criticising the disregard for the rules not attacking the person.

  8. pdm says:

Andrew if HP has descended into the gutter with this post then Labour have been there so long that they have proceeded through the sewers and are now sludge at the bottom of the treatmrnt pond – beyond redemption.

Especially when one reads the muck perpetrated over at Red Alert by Mallard and Co.
