Hone’s going to force by-election

Mana Party spokesman Matt McCarten told Morning report that Hone Harawira is going to resign this week which will force a by-election in Te Tai Tokerau.

The Maori Party has decided to stand a candidate. That makes it more likely that Labour will also stand in the hope the split between Hawawira and the Maori Party will allow its candidate to come through the middle.

The behaviour of Harawira’s mother and sister at the Maori Party hui on Saturday suggest it won’t be a polite campaign.

A six to eight week campaign doesn’t leave much time for whoever is elected to justify the expense. The by-election will cost around $500,000 – which is about $23,800 a sitting day before parliament rises for the general election.

If this spells the end of the Harawira family in Parliament, it just maybe money well spent.

    Posturing to feed an ego.
Can Parliament not pass legislation to prevent this subversion of the democratic system that has all the hallmarks of reckless abuse of public money.
Apart from John Hatfield and his ragtag bunch of troughers what is the real justification for this rort that is only manipulating the system to gain additional funding for the bmfo party in November when as leader of a party he gets the additional funding that Dunne, Anderton and Norman got by rorting the over generous funding available from Parliamentary services.
Surely such a legislative answer would be supported by 120 votes to 1

I mentioned the other day that the power behind Hone are women lead by his mother. They are also his greatest liability. The insults meted out to Tariana Turia and others is certainly not the norm on marae. The lack of respect will be noted if not explicitly commented on- that is not the way its done.
And all this on “Mothers Day”.
