Bid for Meads’ jersey $33,000

The highest bid for Colin Meads’ No 8 All Black jersey is $33,000.

He wore the jersey in 1957 when the All Blacks lost to Canterbury at Lancaster Park and donated it to be auctioned on The Farming Show with all money raised going to the Christchurch earthquake appeal.

AllFlex Platinum Primary Producers Group which has more than 50 members representing m any of the largest farming operations in New Zealand and Australia made the bid last week.

All Flex general manager Shane McManaway said the highest bid for the jersey before the group began raising funds last Thursday evening was just over $5,000. When the amount got to $10,000, one of the group’s members pledged another $10,000 and many others committed to pledges of more than $1000 each during the evening and the following morning before the conference closed.

There was no mention of the jersey on the Farming Show yesterday so I think bids are still being accepted.

Imagine if he put one of his lock jerseys up – you would probably get double the price. He was never a success at No8 for the All Blacks and my guess is that they lost that test against the Aussies. That was a very rare event in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.

@pdm, the rarity value is enhanced by several things.
    Colin Meads at eight.
The ABs playing a NZ provincial team.
The ABs losing to that team.
Aaand I,Me, Moi, was there in person, probably the only time in my life I actively cheered a team beating the ABs (notwithstanding a churlish purchase of a replica Wallaby Jersy as a kneejerk reaction to the “Deans snub”).
I am at a complete loss as to what caused the aberration that was such a game but someone more knowledgeable than self or with access to the 1957 rugby almanac may have the answer.
Of course in those heady days Canterbury was equally invincible as the ABs, well they beat the Boks the previous year didn’t they
