Thursday’s quiz

1. Who wrote: “I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.”?

2. What line follows this one: “Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!”?

3. By what vehicles did Fred Dagg’s Three Kings travel?

4. Which country did King Wenceslas rule?

5. Name the Three Wise Men.

    1. Charles Dickens in A Christmas Carol.

    2. “On Comet, on Cupid, on Donner and Blitzen…” Oh the many years I spent reading that to my kids, before spending the next eight hours trying – badly – to assemble multi-part toys for the morning.

    3. Tractor and car.

    4. Bohemia, although he was a duke rather than a king. And there’s a fantastic riff on him in Terry Pratchett’s Jingo.

    5. Melchior, Caspar, Balthasar (the last of whom hit his head on the lintel, exclaiming “Jesus Christ!” To which Mary replied: “See Joseph, that’s a much nicer name than Fred.” Sorry, I’ll get me coat…)

Remembered this time but it is not looking good.
    However, I enjoyed BH’s joke.

    1. Pass
    2. On Comet on ? , on Donner and Blitzen.
    3. Pass – but probably Trev, Trev and Trev got them there somehow.
    4. Mesopotamia.
    5. Henry, Hansen and Smith.
Well someone had to say it!!!! Not that I have any confidence in them – failed once and should not have had a second chance.

Doh, got here too late. I’ll try anyway, but they don’t count.

    1. Had a dickens of a time guessing this.
    2. Sleepy, Dopey and Blitzen.
    3. Tractor (probably Trev’s), Car (probably a Holden) and one in a scooter, tooting a hooter. That’s my answer and she’ll be right.
    4. I don’t know, but he was ruling around the time of the feast of Stephen in a particularly hot AGW month (UK style)
    5. I like Andrei’s answer the most. And the joke is certainly better than what I was going to say.

Sorry, wrong attribution: Bearhunter’s joke. And Andrei and Bearhunter obviously have the names. Those wise men get all the glory. Must have been the g,f an m. What about the shepherds names though?

David – I had done the post awarding points ahead of time and before you answered. Have a compensatory bonus and a wonderful Christmas.

Zen – Two right with a bonus for the pun and another for humour.
