I told Nik that Stephen Foster was as great a song writer as Cole Porter, John Lennon or Paul McCartney in his time.
He looked at me and said oh yeah then why are his songs so corny –
I said they weren’t when they were new they were fresh and vibrant and it is a measure of their fundamental merit that they have survived until this day and that you know them and everybody else knows them.
He still doesn’t believe me but it so.
The man died in poverty by the way which is kind of sad.
