Tuesday’s Answers

Monday’s questions were:

1. Why was Ernesto Guevara given the nickname Che?

2. What do you add to soil to improve its pH?

3. Who said “Relativity applies to physics not ethics.”?

4. Who wrote Scruffy and what sort of animal was he (Scruffy not the author).

5. What is actinidia chinensis?

I didn’t know there was a book about a tug boat called Scruffy but I accept the knowledge of those who read mroe widelyt han I do.

GD gets the electronic bouquet with  4 right and I’m giving him the fifth because he got the author right and was on the right track with the animal – (though an ape isn’t a mokney).

David got two right, close enough with the kiwifruit and a obnus for extra info on the soil.

Andrei got 3 plus a  1/2 for # 4  but I’ll give him the other 1/2for being near enough with the author and a bonus because his answers to #1 and 4 made me grin.

PDM got 1 1/2 and I’m giving him 1/2 for #3 with a bonus for amusing me with  #1 and no points off for calling me a mad cow because of the quiz in a comment on the post on blood donors 🙂

Paul got three and a bonus for extra info.

Tuesday’s answers follow the break:

1. Che is an expression used by Argentineans.

2. Lime or calcium carbonate.

3. Albert Einstein.

4. The author was Paul Gallico and Scruffy was a Barbary Ape.

5. Kiwifruit.

It was Scuffy the tugboat, not Scruffy.
Scuffy was a toy tugboat who didn’t like “living” only in his (little boy) owner’s bathtub, he yearned for the open sea. Somehow he escaped, went down the brook, to a little river, to a larger river, to the harbour, out to sea and was dashed by the stormy seas etc. He was so frightened and miserable that he longed for the safety of his owner’s bathtub. Of course he was rescued, returned to the bathtub and lived happily ever after.
My interpretation: don’t try new things, don’t spread your wings, don’t try to better yourself, just be happy in your little cage.
    Bit sad, really.
A book my mother loved to read to me, but which I don’t read to my daughter!
According to wikipedia “As of 2001, Scuffy the Tugboat was the eighth all-time bestselling children’s book.”

I wish I wasn’t the kind of guy who, when faced with a taxonomic question that doesn’t quite seem right, checks the answer against he Kew Record of Taxonomic Literature. But it turns out I am.

The kiwifruit was a variety of A. chinensis until 1986 when Liang and Ferguson elevated it to its own species, which took the name of the variety: A . delciosa. Both are still found in the wild in China.

I realise it couldn’t possibly matter less, but that feeling in the back of your mind that something is wrong compelled me to make this comment.

Hollyfiled – thanks for that and a bonus for not subjecting your daughter to the book.

David – corrections and amplifications are always welcome – and this one earns another bonus. I’d better stay away from matters scientific while you’re away 🙂

  6. What do you add to soil to improve its pH?

Surely that depends on whether the soil is too acidic or to alkaline?

Quite right Graeme – I should have said increase not improve.

AS a rusticated old bugger of a grass grower and not so orientated to a horticultural bent I surmised that improving and increasing were one and the same but a pertinent point G E.
Of course moving a ph to a more acidic state is a little more complex as the acidic agents come with problems of balance that do not apply to using lime to move the soil reading to a more alkaline state.
Using Lime to lower the ph is very safely achieved without risk and comparatively cheap.
