When Rev Peter Cape (who also wrote Taumatawhaka etc) wrote and sang this, he sounded like he had alighted from either Ak or Wellington in the middle of the night at that wonderful town… as we all did at some stage
There was a ring of credibility to his version.
Now The Cats are great harmonically, lyrically, and musically cleverly, but about this version I do agree with the sentiments of our reg. correspondent pdm!
Like most of Peter Cape’s stuff we learnt it young and sang it as party pieces for years… it was easy to replicate Don Tom’s chords structures!
