Chattanooga Choo Choo

The first gold record was presented to Glenn Miller for Chattanooga Choo Choo on this day in 1941.

I haven’t been able to listen to his song in quite the same way since the mid to late 1970s when the Otago University Capping Sextet sang their version of it.

I love big band swing music – of course the fundamental thing is not the lead instruments that everybody notices but the rhythm section, drums, guitar and bass that keep it all together

Now that really is a Big Band!

But who are the vocalists? That’s not a standard rendition for the record companies, it’s too long.

    Take your pick…

The answer is Tex Beneke, Paula Kelly, and the Modernaires. It is part of a production number from a 1941 film called “Sun Valley Serenade

The rest of it features Dorothy Dandridge and The Nicholas Brothers.

I collect these old movies, my kids can’t stand them, they prefer lots of CGI and other such gee whizzery, lots of style but little of substance.
