    1 Not sure who wrote this, but it may well refer to a voyage by sea to NZ by migrants in square rigged sailing ships. ( A great book on this is ‘White Clouds’ which records the stories of the individual vessels)
    2 The mighty pohutukawa, one of the ones we have at the beach is 30-40′ tall and in full bloom yesterday;
    3 Shirley Temple’s famous quote… well before becoming Shirley Temple-Black and a US consul;
    4 Ostler Vineyards.. just a guess, and
    5 Eric Roy

    At long last, one where I know an answer, sans google. That is from “The Journey of the Magi” by T. S, Eliot. It’s one of the few poems I know off by heart.

    “All this was a long time ago, I remember,
    And I would do it again, but set down
    This set down
    This. Were we led all that way for
    Birth or death. There was a birth, certainly,
    We had evidence and no doubt.
    I had seen birth and death before
    But had thought they were different.
    This birth was
    Hard and bitter agony for us
    like death, our death.

    We returned to our places, these kingdoms
    But no longer at ease her, in the old dispensation
    With an alien people worshipping their gods.
    I should be glad of another death.”

    I’ve probably got the line breaks wrong there, but I’m pretty confident about the words.

    I think number 2 is a pohutukawa, but I’m not sure.

    Yes back last Monday night…. and its taken this long to wake up at the right time, and not keep falling asleep at inappropriate times… like when there’s a client seeking advice!! Last Friday six of us rode 430k through Northland.. (like I needed another ride!!)… and I felt less safe riding my big bike here than I did riding a 250cc cruiser for 3,800ks through the north of Thailand. NZ is not a safe place to ride.Thailand has millions of bikes and scooters so all traffic are (is/) used to the two wheelers and accord them space and time. Mayanma was a nightmare and not the country I first visited in 1973, but Laos was so peaceful and relaxed. Good trip all round. Maybe ‘Nam next year. Mind you I bought a new bike this morning on which a lad from Katikati has just toured through Argentina and Chile… so there’s plenty of adventures out there!!
