* Adam Smith corrected me last week for calling the football match between Bahrain and New Zealand a test. Can someone enlighten me as to when a match between two national teams is a test and when it isn’t?

* 99 then out – how frustrating for Daniel Vettori.

Is Adam English by any chance HP – they like to call Tests Internationals.

Two strange decisions by Principal Henry this week bringing in Tialata for Franks and Keino for Thompson. The scrum has been unstable all season when Tialata has played and stable with Franks there. Plus it was only two or three weeks ago he was lauding the loose forward trio of McCaw, Read and Thompson as the best available – it is not as though Thompson played badly against England.

I’m pretty sure tests are only played in rugby (both codes) and cricket.

In Football the match is named relative to the competition its played in – so we beat Bahrain in a World Cup qualifier and in the same weekend Aussie beat Oman in an Asian Cup qualifier. Games outside of specific competitions are called friendlies

Don’t know about Soccer but in rugby one test status is determined by the IRB (International Rugby Board).

Heres an example of how it can work:

“The Manu Samoa starting team, has only three players released from their overseas contracts including captain Filipo Levi, Semo Sititi and Joseph Stowers. The side has been rated an under strength side and expectations are all for a huge margin to the All Blacks.

The IRB sanctioned matches does not include tonights game which may not be at test level.

Samoas coach Lepale Niko Palamo told the New Zealand audience last night that Samoas traditional
physicality may not be their strength and that this match is all part of Samoas development towards
    the 2011 World Cup.

There had been many local voices against the match saying it will only make Samoan rugby look bad.”

good point. Surely the word international is a better description of the event, whatever the code.
