    Aagh the six o’clock swill.
    Such graphic memories.
Very large public bars populated at 4.45 with a few, mostly elderly men sipping on a glass of beer, their attitude to drinking shaped by financial restraint, wisdom and contentment with their lot
By 5.30 they were gone and replaced with hundreds of thirsty men, mainly hard working manual workers drinking as if there was no tomorrow. At 5.55 “last orders” was the cry of bar staff, at 6.00 no more sales and by 6.15 the last drinkers most of who carried one or more 1/2 gs of draught beer, got in their vehicle in the very large car park and drove home for dinner. For the modern educated, a 1/2 g was around 2 liters.
This terrible drinking behavior , inflicted on us by successive governments from a back ground of prohibition, idiotic licencing law and social engineering lunacy, was world famous and a few remnants survive today. One that comes to mind is the Bush Inn center at Church corner Riccarton ChCh where some of the carpark and the concrete floor bar remain perhaps as a result of the nearby Ilam University with its high number of students and other young people.
