Halal cert row religion or non tariff barrier?

New Zealand’s $600 million trade in meat and dairy products is threatened by Indonesia’s October 1 deadline for New Zealand to provide satisfactory halal certification.

Without the certification meat and dairy products won’t  be able to be exported to Indonesia.

Is this about religion or is it a non-tariff barrier?

    HP, I worked in the freezing works in the seventies when the frenzy for “hygiene” requirements was not reflected in the countries that demanded them here in NZ.
    Of course it is a trade barrier and we are naive to think thst every other country will play fair. Fireblight springs to mind as one example.
