A bloke in Napier took a brand new $22,000 Holden Clubsport for a test drive and slammed it into a power pole.

He then drove it for a further kilometre.

Hawkes Bay Today says that he picked up a passenger and that the car `fish tailed’ for about 80 metres before impact.

A potential candidate for the Darwin Awards had he not survived the accident.

Who is the dealer? I would love to buy a brand new CD CS for $22000.

Peter, my thoughts too, a new clubsport for $22K ??!? Try over $80K new, so it’s probably very second hand, and particularly second hand now. As I recall, dealers used to have insurance for test drives, not sure circumstances they cover though.

I recall once doing a minor version of this myself in the distant past. The dealer left almost no petrol in the car, and during the test drive it started to splutter on the motorway. I immediately ducked left to get out of the way and clipped a car I didn’t see, luckily with only relatively minor damage. I didn’t have to pay, although I did buy the car, rather to my sorrow in terms of reliability.

Peter and Ed – to quote yesterdays HB Today again:

`what had been a sparkling new $22,000 Holden Clubsport’.

They also say that the driver is facing several charges and possibly claims for the $2,000 insurance excess.

The guy was 29 and after the impact the chassis was `bent like a banana’.
