Clark Visit to Cover Cracks

The ODT reports  that Helen Clark’s visit to Dunedin tomorrow might be used to try to heal rifts created in Labour’s Dunedin South electorate organisation when Clare Curran won the candidate selection over incumbent David Benson-Pope.

Although it’s not a wealthy electorate, Dunedin South  has long been one of Labour’s biggest financial contributers. The need for campiagn cash will be in Clark’s mind and she will also want to shore up support for Curran to try and head off any ideas Benon-Pope might have of standing as an indpendent.

In a way, it hardly matters who wins the local seat provided the voters give Labour their party vote. They would end up with the same number of seats even if Benson-Pope did win as an independent.

If Benson-Pope won the seat and pledged to support Labour they’d have him in the electorate plus someone on the list so they’d end up with one more MP than if their candidate won the seat. But having an unhappy ex-member of the party standing in a safe seat can harm the party vote.

FWIW, I agree. Much would depend on whether or not locals bought into the moral panic about the tennis ball affair. I suspect most wouldn’t much care.
